The Mincio River

The Mincio river originates in Peschiera from Lake Garda and flows through the moraine landscape of the southern Lake Garda with its gentle hills of vineyards and oak forests. With its 70 km length, it reaches up to Mantua, offering a very scenic, flat bike path. Shortly after Grazie di Curtatone, the river widens and eventually forms the first of the three lakes that encircle Mantua. The regulation of the river course around Peschiera, established in 1190, is absolutely worth seeing. There are many birds native to the Mincio area. The system with historical locks and canals, the villas from the time of the Gonzaga, and the churches Santuario di S. Maria delle Grazie and the church of S. Maria degli Angeli are located along the route, thus also offering a cultural image of the area.

Borghetto

The small village of Borghetto, with its landscape and monuments, has recently been admitted to the club of "Italy's Most Beautiful Villages." It was built directly into the Mincio River and is characterized by historical fortifications from the Middle Ages. This place enchants with an incomparable charm and is equally popular among guests and locals. Numerous restaurants and cafes invite you to linger. And there is much to see: the bell tower, the wheels of the watermills (once used for grinding wheat and grains), and the fortifications of the Visconti Bridge, an extraordinary fortified dam. It was constructed in 1393 by order of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Duke of Milan, to ensure the impregnability of the eastern borders of the Duchy.
